Chapter 7

His arm around her waist disappeared, and Liane quickly stepped aside. As she did so, the cloak was pulled from he and flung into a corner.

Borga’s strong jaw was clenched, a muscle twitched as he gritted his teeth. Big hands were fisted, his nostrils flared slightly as he glared down at her. One look into the fury banked in his eyes was enough to let her know that his rage hadn’t abated on the way back from the settlement.

“I take it you’re still angry.” Hiding the tremor in her voice, she started to back away towards the window.

“Stand still.” His voice cracked out.

“I don’t think so.”

“Goddamn it, Liane, stop!”

She halted uneasily.

Sucking in a deep breath, he continued to simply glare at her. In the confines of the solitude cabin, he looked huge. Even though the top of her head was not far below his chin, his brawny body was intimidating. With every deep breath he took, the muscles of his pectorals swelled. Massive biceps flexed and bunched while he clenched and unclenched his big hands.

In that moment, as his eyes pinned her to the spot, Liane knew she was vulnerable. Whatever he planned, there was nothing she could do to stop him.

He took a step forward, but when she made to take one back, he actually growled a warning, the rumble deep in his throat. Refusing to show her uncertainty, Liane raised her chin and met his furious gaze. He took another slow step forward, then another, each step almost like that of stalking. His boots came down quietly, and that was more unnerving than his stomping in rage would have been.

This tightly reined temper made her shiver in apprehension.

When he was so close that there was only a couple of inches between them, he grated out from between clenched teeth, “Why?”

At least he was talking. Sort of. “Because it was my problem.”

“You disobeyed me.”

“I wasn’t aware I was a prisoner anymore,” she hedged.

“You disobeyed me.”

“I did what I had to.”

“You disobeyed me.” He was unrelenting.

“I don’t have to take orders from you.” Oh shit, that’s probably not a wise thing to say.

“You will take orders from me until you’re safely with your people,” he said from between clenched teeth. “In fact, you will take orders from me if I deem it necessary for your safety.”

Common sense was dampened by the unfairness of his demand. “Then maybe you should have offered to come with me. Then I wouldn’t have gone alone.”

The hazel eyes flashed fury. “Do you dare to blame this on me, wench?”

“Blame what?” she retorted, her own temper starting to come to the fore. “You’re the one coming on like some kind of hero!”

“Hero?” he snarled. “Don’t you ever, ever, put yourself in such danger again! Do you understand me?”

“I hear you,” she snarled. “Now back off!” Placing her hands on his chest, she shoved hard.

It was like trying to shift a mountain. A very enraged mountain who’d obviously been pushed to his limits and nearly beyond them.
